The Intensive Care Unit: Injury Updates

The Intensive Care Unit: Injury Updates

The Intensive Care Unit: Injury Updates

2009 has been an awful year for injuries thus far – a staggering 9 of the top 30 rated forwards at the start of the year are, are expected to be, or have been, on the shelf for at least two weeks or longer: Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, D.Sedin, Savard, Staal, Gagne, Toews and Elias. Four of those nine (Kovalchuk, Sedin, Gagne and Elias) were all expected to be gone for six weeks or longer.
As if that weren’t enough, 4 of the top 12 rated defensemen are also currently out of action: Weber, Souray, Markov and Gonchar.
What’s especially surprising is that aside from Simon Gagne and Sheldon Souray, most of these players do not have a reputation for being injury prone. Consider for example that Daniel Sedin has missed one game in the past five seasons. Or that Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Malkin and Savard have missed a cumulative total of 21 games in the past three seasons combined. On draft day, these players seemed to be as close to a sure bet as there could be – nevertheless, as we enter week 5 of the fantasy season, these injuries have left many owners panicking as they watch their team start to slip in the standings. Here’s the latest injury updates heading into the weekend.
Alexander Ovechkin, Washington – Out with a shoulder injury until next Wednesday at the earliest. Ovechkin was in a non-contact coloured jersey in practice on Thursday, and did not skate on a line, so keep him benched for the weekend.
Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh – Also nursing a shoulder injury (October 29), Malkin is rehabbing and resting his shoulder but has not yet resumed skating. Coach Bylsma recently commented that things are progressing well with Malkin, but don’t expect him back in the lineup before week 7. Especially considering Malkin’s importance to Team Russia in the upcoming Olympic tournament, I would imagine there is a substantial amount of pressure from the Russian Hockey Federation not to rush his comeback until he is 100% healthy.
Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta – Kovalchuk suffered a broken bone in his right foot in the team’s Oct 24 loss to the Sharks and isn’t expected back until late-November at the earliest. Kovalchuk has had a great start to his year, and this being a contract year as well, one would expect very big things from him when he returns.
Simon Gagne, Philadelphia – Hopefully you didn’t waste an early-round draft pick on this guy. Gagne has had three surgeries in his abdominal/groin area in the past three years , and is now looking at a fourth. He’s currently listed as out of commission for the next 6-8 weeks, but knowing his history with groin problems this could drag on much longer. As his return approaches the 2 week mark, look to trade him to an desperate owner looking for some goals. Whatever you get in return will be a bonus.
Daniel Sedin, Vancouver - Daniel finally got the cast removed from his fractured left foot on November 1st, but he is still wearing a walking boot. His earliest return seems to be towards the middle of week 7. Look for Steve Bernier to be demoted once Sedin returns.
Marc Savard, Boston – Savard actually played the first seven games of the season with a broken left foot from a shot taken in the preseason. He never realized that it was actually broken until he took yet another shot off his foot against Phoenix on October 17, and the medical staff found the break in a X-ray. The good news is that he has shed the protective boot and is working out, a definite step in the right direction. Nevertheless, don’t look for him to return until the end of November. The Bruins could really use him as their offense is averaging a meagre 2.2 goals per game overall.
Eric Staal, Carolina – Talk about an iron man – Staal has only missed one NHL game in his career, having played 349 consecutive games, the longest in the Hurricanes’ history. The nature of the injury is being closely guarded, aside from the fact that it’s an upper-body injury. Team reports indicate that he’ll be out 2-4 weeks. This would be an ideal time to try and score Staal from a frustrated owner and stash him on your IR. He’s had a slow start to the season, but much of that is due to Erik Cole’s injury. Cole is now back, and when both Staal and Cole are healthy and on the same line, Staal is a point-per-game player. See the previous posting for more details.
Jonathan Toews, Chicago - Toews is officially listed as day-to-day with a concussion, after being bulldozed by the Canucks’ Willie Mitchell. Toews is looking like he’s making progress and there is even a possibility that he may play this weekend. Concussions are a scary thing and very unpredictable however, so be weary if any of those symptoms return.
Patrik Elias, New Jersey – Elias is looking to make his debut tonight against the Islanders after recovering from groin surgery in September. Elias will likely start off centering the second line between Langenbrunner and Halischuk, but should see time on the first power play unit as a point man.
Shea Weber, Nashville – After taking a Brendan Morrow shot off the left foot on October 31st, Weber is expected to be out for one to two weeks. The injury is not considered serious, and in fact Weber was able to finish the second period and play on into the third.
Sheldon Souray, Edmonton – This is an injury that could be a real drag. Souray took a vicious shot to the head after being slammed into the boards by Jarome Iginla on October 8. The initial prognosis was for one or two weeks, but it’s now looking like it will be more like two months before the stud defenseman makes it back. Souray met with Oilers’ coach Pat Quinn last week and said he felt really good, but the next day his headaches returned to the extent that he couldn’t even come to the rink. A week later Souray has started to feel better and work out again, but it sounds like this is an injury that could linger the entire season, and even when he returns, he is no sure thing considering his physical style of play. Look to package Souray in a trade for a more certain asset.
Sergei Gonchar, Pittsburgh – Gonchar is expected to have the cast of his broken left wrist next week, when the Pens return from their road trip. The team has really struggled without him in the lineup, going 3 for 32 on the powerplay. When healthy, Gonchar is one of the top defenseman in the league. Look for him to return by week 8.

Basic Economics: Buy Low, Sell High

Basic Economics: Buy Low, Sell High

Basic Economics: Buy Low, Sell High

We’re all familiar with one of the most basic principles of economics: buy low, sell high. In fantasy hockey, the same premise applies to player transactions – knowing when to pick up, or get rid of, certain players is the key for achieving success.

So who are this year’s buy low/sell-high candidates? Here’s a few:

1. Eric Staal, Carolina – BUY LOW: Eric Staal owners from last year will recall that Staal’s fantasy performance only really took off when Cole returned to the Hurricanes in a late-season trade with the Oilers. Following that trade, Staal reeled off 25 points in 18 games, after spending the first 64 games scoring meager 50 points. This year, Staal has once again sputtered out of the gate with 5 points in his first 13 games – not surprisingly though, Erik Cole was out of action for most of those first 13 games with an injury. With a healthy Cole returning to the lineup on Monday, expect to see Eric Staal bounce back to his high-scoring ways. Unfortunately, Staal suffered an upper-body injury a few days ago that will keep him out of the lineup for a week or two, but this may in fact create the perfect opportunity to snatch Cole from a frustrated owner. He can likely be had for a number two center, or an overachiever (see below).

2. Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit – BUY LOW: in this case, we’re not talking about someone who has been a complete dud coming out of the gate. Pavel has a very respectable 10 points in his first 10 games, but for a player that came off back-to-back 97 point seasons, and was selected on average 10th overall, some owners may be getting impatient and expect more out of their first round pick. However, there is good reason to think that his performance will shift into high gear very shortly: first, Datsyuk has been struggling with an injury to start the season, but seems to be turning the corner with that and skating well again. Secondly, in an effort to stimulate his team, coach Mike Babcock has reunited Datsyuk with Zetterberg, a combination which has been lethal in previous years and is certain to explode once again. Finally, Detroit GM Ken Holland mentioned in a recent radio interview that the team’s strategy at the start of the season was to reduce the workload of their top guns in order to keep them fresh for the playoffs. This plan for reduced ice-time has backfired however, as the Wings have suffered injury after injury, and have floundered out of the gate, currently sitting 11th (gasp!) in the Western Conference. As a result, expect to see a return to the norm for the Red Wings’ guns, as they push to reclaim their throne atop the conference. All this should bode well for Datsyuk, but the window to trade for him is quickly closing.

3. Matt Stajan, Toronto – BUY LOW: ordinarily, I wouldn’t recommend any Leafs player but I think we might have an exception here, especially for deeper leagues. Matt Stajan showed some promise as a playmaker last year with 40 assists in 76 games, much of that on a line with a rejuvenated Jason Blake. This year the Leafs have added 36-goal scorer Phil Kessel to their lineup , who expects to make his Leafs debut on Tuesday after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. Matt Stajan stands to benefit the most from this, as he is now flanked by two proven scorers on either side and should get lots of playing time as the Leafs only real offensive line. He should be good for 60-65 points, along with a 50-60 PIM.

4. Dustin Penner, Edmonton – SELL HIGH: this is a screaming sell. Although Penner has never posted more than 47 points in any of his previous four years, he’s started off this year on fire, with 19 points in his first 13 games. Furthermore, his career shooting percentage is in the range of 12%, much lower than the 19% clip he is currently sniping at. Neither of those trends seem likely to continue, especially on an Edmonton team that isn’t exactly an offensive powerhouse. In fact, 9 of Penner’s 19 points have come in two games, which has resulted in a significant padding of his statistics. Indeed, aside from a 4 point outburst against Detroit on October 29, Penner has been held pointless in 4 of his last 5 games. He is definitely a sell candidate and can perhaps net you a solid defenseman in return.

5. Matt Carle, Philadelphia – SELL HIGH: Carle has 12 points in his first 12 games with the Flyers this year, with a plus-11 rating and 8 PIM. 7 of those points have come in 2 games, leaving him with 5 points in his remaining 10 games. I think that the latter stats are more indicative of his future performance, especially given the latest injuries to sniper Simon Gagne and Daniel Briere. Carle posted 26 points last year and although a 40 point season seems likely, his current pace is unsustainable. Look to package him in a trade to a team thin on blue liners while he’s hot.

Lone star Heat

Lone star Heat

Who’s Hot: Lone Star Heat

The Dallas Stars’ hot start to the 2009-2010 season has calmed the fears of many in the Lone Star State that last year’s nosedive was the start of ugly things to come. With their 4-3 OT win against the Leafs on Wednesday, the Stars are now off to a 6-2-4 start and rank eighth in the league in scoring. Especially refreshing is the balanced scoring that this team has received – there are five players with 11 or more points in the team’s first twelve games. As such, there are several Stars players on our “Who’s Hot” list:

Brad Richards, Dallas – After breaking into the league as a promising rookie in 2000, Brad Richards has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success: a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe trophy in 2003, a 91-point season in 2004 and a spot on the 2006 Canadian Olympic hockey team. 2008-2009 was a difficult season for Richards as he missed 26 games, many of them due to a broken right wrist. This year however Richards looks to build on his impressive resume and has one of the best starts of any player in the league: 15 points in 11 games, and most notably a plus-7 rating, which is encouraging given his dreadful minus-19 and minus-26 ratings in 2006 and 2007. Although he’ll never give you more than 20-30 PIM and may not be the best plus/minus source he’s off to a scorching start and barring any injuries, should be a lock for 70-75 points as your #2 center.

James Neal, Dallas – Neal is in his sophomore year with the Stars and is off to a terrific start: 14 points in 12 games, a shorthanded goal and a game-winning goal. Oh, and throw in a plus-7 rating while you’re at it. Although he’s yet to prove he can sustain this kind of scoring pace (he had 37 points as a rookie), what is impressive is his shooting percentage: 14% in 2008-2009 and 17.5% thus far. The fact that he was able to achieve such a high shooting percentage last year and continuing into this year as well, suggests that this year’s hot start may not be such a fluke after all. He’s getting a lot of ice time alongside a great playmaker in Brad Richards and with his demonstrated propensity to bury the biscuit he should be in line for a solid season. If you’re in a deep league looking for a breakout winger, this might be your guy.

Loui Eriksson, Dallas – Go and get this guy. If you’re looking for some goals, Eriksson is quietly poised to be the league’s next 40-goal scorer this year. Having potted 36 goals on a underachieving Stars team last year, Eriksson has picked up the pace in recent days with 6 points in the past 4 games and is flirting with a 40-goal pace. He possessed an unreal 20.2% scoring percentage last year and has improved on that thus far, scoring at a 22.7% clip. He may not have registered on most people’s radar quite yet and therefore you may still have a chance at snagging this guy in a trade, or perhaps even as a free agent in 8-team leagues.

Craig Andersen, Colorado – Is this for real? 10 wins, a miniscule 1.97 GAA, a staggering .940 SV% and two shutouts. Playing for a team that everyone expected to contend for a lottery pick, Andersen is the top rated goalie according to Yahoo! player rankings and has propelled the Avalanche to first overall in the league. Furthermore, Andersen looks to be the real deal – he’s reeled off save percentages of .935 and .924 the past two years, which is why the Avalanche gambled and made him their number one goalie in the off-season.

Jon Quick, Los Angeles – He may not be Craig Andersen-esque in terms of his stats (2.59 GAA, .905 SV%), but Jon Quick has reeled off 8 wins thus far, challenging Marc-Andre Fleury and Craig Andersen for the league lead in wins. He put in stellar back-to-back road efforts on Wednesday and Thursday against the top teams in the West, San Jose and Vancouver, but lost both games 2-1 as his offence let him down. This guy could be a great number 2 or 3 goalie on your team, and based on last year’s solid number (2.48 GAA, .914 SV%) he’s still got room to improve. The Kings are a young team on the upswing with Kopitar, Smyth, Doughty and Brown leading the way and Quick looks to be the beneficiary of a great nucleus of players.

Drew Doughty, Los Angeles – Doughty has outperformed the likes of Mike Green, Scott Niedermayer, Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Pronger. With 12 points in 14 games, Doughty is certainly off to a hot start and living up to his 2nd overall picking in the 2008 draft. Playing on a unit with one of the league’s top scorers in Anze Kopitar has helped as well. Despite the Kings’ and Doughty’s hot start though, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to sustain this pace – if you can package him with another overachiever in a trade for a more reliable defenceman that may be underperforming or is injured (eg. Sheldon Souray, Nicklas Lidstrom) you might end up ahead in the end.

Dustin Penner, Edmonton – Just when you think this guy is going to come back to Earth, he lights up the defending Western Conference champs with a 4-point night. Penner is playing absolutely out of his world with 19 points in his first 13 games and is clicking on all cylinders with linemate Ales Hemsky. As good as this guy is though, he may be playing over his head – when you account for the fact that 9 of his 19 points came in just two games, his stats are a little less flashy: 10 points in 11 games. Still good, but not screaming good. Add to that the fact that he’s scoring on 23.7% of his shots, which is well above his career average of approximately 12%, and you can start to see cracks developing in his fantasy armour. Take advantage of his hot start and deal him for a more predictable, reliable player who’s simply off to a slow start.

Time to Win Your Matchup !!

Time to Win Your Matchup !!

Hi Guys,

Every week , we here at Sportsruckus  will fill you in on how you can get the edge for this weeks upcoming NFL games for your Fantasy Football Leagues (FFL, from now on !!)

This week we have some good tips for you so you can hopefully win your game !!

Qb’s

Tom Brady,

I know its a no brainer but  remember no one has given up more td passes than the bucs and Tommy Boy just threw for 6 in the snow in New England , so he will still produce in the downpour that’s bound to occur playing in Old England !!

Peyton Manning

Going on the road and playing in a dome !! Go figure ! St Louis won’t put up too much of a fight since they have no wr’s so Peyton should have plenty of opportunies to reward his owners.

Donovan McNabb

Quite frankly, he stunk last week, so look for another rebound like last year when he had a monster game after he stunk too ! Plus in Philly they forget what you’ve done for them very quickly and with Kevin on the Kolb in the wings , Donovan better produce now !

Matt Shaub

He’s just too hot to pass up right now, look for big things against a really good 49er defense.

Rb’s

DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart

The Panthers are salivating for the Bills to come and bring the defence that gave up 309 yards rushing last week to the Jets.

Michael Turner

The Burner is going to do just that to the Cowboys who couldn’t stop much in their last effort in KC .

Ronnie Brown

He hasn’t been stopped yet ! The Saints bring in a formidable defence so we will see where the chips fall on this one but Miami has moved the ball on every team they’ve played so far.

Jammal Charles,

Or is it Charlie Jammal ? Either way , with the Charger defensive line in shambles, this no-name will be on everyones stat sheet come monday morning

Wr’s

Randy Moss

Who’s gonna stop him ? Tiki’s brother ? Tom Brady’s #1 target and besides he hates bangers and mash so he’s been spending extra time on the field and in the video room !

Reggie Wayne

Peytons not the only one playing in a dome this week !

Andre Johnson

If Roddy White put up 200 yards on the 49ers last game, imagine what this tackle breaking beast will do !

Dwayne Bowe

It’s not that Bowe is that good, it’s just that the Charger secondary is that bad !

TE’s

Dallas Clark,

With Will Witherspoon just traded, who’s gonna cover the best receiving tight end in the league ?

Brent Celek,

This guys the best unknown player in the league right now, Rocky McIntosh will be going to school on monday night in front of 20 million people…ouch !!

Special Teamer

Leon Washington,

The Raiders have one of the worst kickoff coverage in the league not to mntion that little Leon is a Stud !!

Defense

Philadelphia,

Washington only put 6 on the Chiefs at home….oh boy ! I might be in bed by halftime !

New York Jets

With Darrell Revis taking out their best receiver (whoever that is ) look  for the Jets to get on Jamarcus early and often.

There you have it, now go kick some tush on Sunday, and if you win, just email sportsruckus and I will send you my PayPal account for donations !
